Based on a True Story?...

1. Is Fatal Frame III based on a true story?
Fatal Frame III takes a lot of influence from Japanese horror movies urban legends, Makoto Shibata's personal experiences & dreams, the concept of the Baku spirit (which eats nightmares) and the old Japanese folklore character the Dream Buyer, who bought and sold good dreams. The Manor of Sleep is based on an abandoned house that Shibata-san used to play in as a child.

The Game

4. What is Fatal Frame III: The Tormented about?
The game follows the Rei Kurosawa, a 23 year old freelance photographer who has just recently taking a job taking pictures of a haunted mansion. Shockingly, the image of her dead fiance, Yuu, who was killed in a car accident, appeared in the photos. As she investigates further and further into the mansion, she notices a strange snake-like tattoo appearing on her arm. What's worse...some of the ghosts in the mansion also have the same tattoo..

Do I have to play the first two games to understand what is going on in this one?
No. The game does a pretty good job of explaining what you need to know (if you read the notes), but it will spoil you concerning the previous games.
8. Is this the same Camera Obscura as in Fatal Frame II?
No. The Camera in this game (in reality) is broken and no longer works. Kei Amakura finds it in an abandoned house not in the Minakami village

9. How many hours are there?
13 Hours

10. Where is the save point in this game?
The save points in this game are blue lanterns which are located all around the Manor of Sleep when Rei is 'dreaming' and the Camera Obscura which sits on the desk in her room when she's awake.

12. Was anything changed from the Japanese version to US/European Version?
Voice actors and Language (of course) changed. The Ending FMV is a bit different. In the Japanese version, Yuu absorbs Rei's tattoos, but then they disappear. In the US/European versions, the tattoos stay with him.

Where are the exits to the Manor of Sleep?
There are three of them. You do not need to complete a chapter before exiting the dream world. You can enter and exit whenever you like.
Rei's Entrance - foyer hallway of Manor of Sleep
Miku's Entrance - front of Himuro mansion
Kei's Entrance - Osaka House doorway
13. Any changes to film?
Film and items cannot be exchanged amongst characters. Also, unlike Fatal Frame II, your Type 07 Film isn't unlimited anymore

I'm running out of Miasma candles! Help!
If you use up your masmia candles, go 'wake up' and then go back to sleep. They will automatically replenish. Another trick, is that if your miasma candle is almost out, if you wake up and then go back to sleep, your candle will be completely 'full' again.

How do I get the notched arrow key?
Go to the Partioned room during Hour VI and take a photograph of Yoshino. This will trigger the sidequest. Then go defeat Stroller Grandma (You do not necessarily have to get a fatal frame off of her as previously reported). Once you do that, she will drop the key.

Why does the Manor of Sleep have parts of Himuro Mansion & Minakami village in it?
The Manor of Sleep takes place in the dreamworld. It's explained that the house manifests former experiences and events in the minds of the victims to ensnare and trap them. Himuro is obviously in the house because Miku has the curse, and Minakami is there because Mio has the curse.

Will they ever port this game to the Xbox or Xbox360?
Most likely not. Since the fourth game is coming out.

Do you think they'll re-release the first three games?
While the first three games were recently re-released in Japan (for under $20) as part of a reprint of the Playstation: the best PS2 versions, there has been no news for a reprint/re-release for the US or European territories at this time for any console system.

How many endings are there?
There are two. [Endings are here]

How do you get the second ending?
First thing is first, the second ending can only be obtained on a second playthrough of the game. The following is done when you are Kei.
  1. Stairs Hallway 2F - move the dresser that is blocking the door and walk acroess the roof to the door outside.
  2. Closed Room - Obtain Purple Diary 4 climb down to the Hearth room
  3. Hearth Room - Defeat the Kyouka Kuze, take the Holly key, & go to the Kimono Room
  4. Kimono Room - Go to Kyouka's night mirror stand (where you first saw her) and open it with the Holly Key. Take the items inside.

After that, just defeat the game. If you're worried you haven't fulfilled the requirements, check on Kei in Rei's living room in Hour 12. If he's sleeping peacefully, you have it!

Character Relationships

Is Rei Kurosawa related to Sae & Yae?
No. Rei's last name seems to be just a 'nod' to the Kurosawa family, but she is not related to them. In fact, none of Rei's family or connections are mentioned in the game, correlation charts or in Japanese gameguides. However since Sae died before having kids, and Yae's family tree runs directly to Miku, she's not related to either girl.

Is Miku in it? Why does Miku have her powers back?
Yes. Miku is one of 3 playable characters in the game. Miku's powers apparently come back when she begins to dream of the Manor of Sleep.

Are Mio & Mayu be in the game? How old are they?
Mio is in the game. With Mayu, it's debateable, but she is in a photograph & mentioned frequently. Both girls are still 15 years old. (The game takes place two months after FF2)

Is Kei Amakura related to Mio & Mayu?
Yes. Kei is Mio & Mayu's uncle. Shizu Amakura's younger brother.

Is Kei related to Dr. Aso(u) too then?
No. Mio & Mayu are related to Dr. Aso(u) through their father, Misao Aso(u), Kei isn't related to Dr. Aso(u).

Is Yuu related to Dr. Aso(u)
Yes. This is 'hinted' at in the game, but confirmed in the official FF3 gameguide.

Are Yuu & Misao related, if so, does Kei & Yuu know they're family?
Misao & Yuu's relationship is never made clear. They're both direct descendents of Dr. Aso(u), but they could be cousins for all we know. Kei & Yuu are definately close friends, and Shizu marrying Misao might be how they met, but this isn't mentioned or confirmed in the game or gameguides.

Is it Asou or Aso?
It's kinda both? This is a personal preference when it comes to translating Japanese characters. In FF2, Aso was spelt without the u, in FF3, the translator kept the u. Hence why to keep confusion at a minimum, all Aso(u) family members are having their names spelt with the 'u' in parenthesis.

Is the crimson butterfly who helps Kei Mayu?
There's no sure proof, but a lot of fans like to think it is her.

What are the four girls names? Why do you call them pacifiers?
The girls' names are Hisame, Amane, Shigure, & Minamo. In the Japanese version of the game, their title is 'pacifier' not 'handmaiden'. This is because their job was to 'pacify' or 'calm' the tattooed priestess with their singing during the ritual.

Is the rope shrine maiden Kirie?
No. It's Kizuna Himuro, a different rope shrine maiden.

Is the Kusabi Seijiro Makabe?
Unsure..probably? Considering the events reflected in FF3, I would say that the Kusabi is probably Makabe, and not a former Kusabi (as previously thought).

The Twin Shrine Maidens in the game, are they the Kiryu twins? If not, who are they?
They are not the Kiryu twins. They are Tsuzuri & Musubi Osaka. (Their names aren't revealed ingame, but their story is explained further in the Zero 3 Comic Anthology.)

Compatibility

38. Is the xbox version of this game backwards compatible with the Xbox360? (region codes still apply!)
US: Yes
Euro: Yes
Japan: Unknown

39. Can I play the Japanese/Euro versions of this game on my PS3?
Apparently, for older PS2 games, region codes still apply. So sadly, you can't play the Japanese version on your US PS3 without having a Japanese PS3 or have made modifications to your system. Same goes with PAL versions too.

40. Is the PS2 Version of this came backwards compatible with the PS3?
As far as I know, yes, and save for minor issues (lighting, graphics, pauses in FMVs) the games should work? (If you've had a different experience, please email me!)

Merchandise

42. Do you know where I can get FFIII for Playstation 2?
Ebay, locale gamestore, amazon.com, playasia.com etc. There are several places, so I would look online.

43. Do you know where I can get Fatal Frame III Merchandise?
Amazon Japan, Yahoo Japan Auctions, Playasia.com, ebay. There are several places...just be prepared to look around a bit, and fork over some cash. For ordering on Amazon Japan, check out the Ordering FAQ

44. Will you sell me some of your merchandise? Will you buy items for me? Etc?
I do not wish to sell any of the FF Merchandise I have collected over the years. Also, I am sorry, but I do not buy items on behalf of others.
