In Fatal Frame II, the Darkness (闇), like Malice and the Rift, is the force that causes spirits to become hostile. The Darkness came forth from the Hellish Abyss during the Repentance, spilled out of the hole usually covered by the Offering Stone and engulfed all of Minakami Village, cursing and slowly killing all who came in contact with it. The village was plunged into endless night, and every time there was an earthquake in the area, the Darkness spread a little further.

In Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, Darkness would periodically begin to spread through the village, causing sickness and death. When the Tokoyomi Ritual failed, the shrine maiden Maya was infected by the Darkness, and she and her diary were cursed. As a result, anyone who found the diary would be drawn into Maya's world and trapped there.
