The Calamity was a horrible disaster which was the direct result of the Hell Gate opening when Kirie Himuro's Strangling Ritual failed. This was due to Kirie having regrets and second thoughts about sacrificing her life. She felt as though she was responsible for her lover's death. Kirie's blood that was left on the Laceration Rope was not strong enough to seal the gate.
Thus, the Hell Gate flung open and the Calamity occurred, spilling out Malice that spread throughout the mansion. At the same time, the Holy Mirror shattered into five separate pieces. Those that survived the initial blast were massacred by Lord Himuro, the current ceremony master, who chased and slew everyone he encountered in the mansion, before ultimately killing himself.
As a result of the Calamity, all 1,347 souls within Himuro Mansion perished. Because of this, the souls of those who died that day and those who had died previously filled the mansion. Kirie herself was split into two entities, a violent, vengeful spirit tainted by the Malice, and a younger version of herself (White Kimono), who remained unaffected and sought to help her older self.
Kirie and the others continued to haunt Himuro Mansion. Visitors who came to the mansion became cursed themselves, slowly beginning to bear the rope marks Kirie herself bore, before being torn limb from limb.
The Calamity was finally stopped when Miku Hinasaki arrived at the mansion searching for her brother Mafuyu. Solving the mystery, she was able to gather the missing pieces of the Holy Mirror and purify Kirie Himuro's soul. Kirie's rejoined spirit then sealed the Hell Gate once more, and the spirits of those trapped within the mansion were released.
