The Rite of Spirits was performed to create viable Engravers for the Piercing of the Soul ceremony.

Preparation

Female tattoo artists from nearby villages were brought to the Kuze Shrine to become Engravers.[1]

The Ritual

The Engravers gouged out their own eyes. This had several purposes:

  • It represented their complete dedication to the Kuze Shrine, demonstrating that they could never leave.
  • It increased their spiritual intuition, allowing them to discern the emotions of the red and Indigo ink,[2] and enabled them to engrave the tattoos on the Priestess without being led astray by sight.[3]
  • It allowed them to see the dreams of the priestess even when awake.[4]

Result

The Engravers were now able to participate in the Piercing of the Soul rite.
