Past

Rei is a photographer. Prior to the events of the game, Rei lived with her fiancé, Yuu Asou and his friend's sister, Miku Hinasaki in their residence. After the events of Fatal Frame, Miku had no family left and she came to live with Rei and Yuu after Mafuyu's disappearance/death. Miku became Rei's close friend and her assistant and the three lived together peacefully.

Rei's car accident

However, recently, Rei has been struggling with the recent death Yuu Asou; he died as a result of a car accident that occurred whilst Rei was behind the wheel. Blaming herself for his death, Rei slowly shuts herself away from the outside world, only leaving her house on photography assignments. She stops photographing people and only takes pictures of landscapes and architecture.

Fatal Frame III

While on assignment of photographing the ruins of a supposedly haunted location, the Kuze Shrine, Rei catches a glimpse of a familiar face around the corner. The person standing there is her dead fiancé, Yuu. Rei chases after him, only to realize no one is there.

That evening, back at home, Rei dreams of a mansion covered in the snow. Yuu leads her through the manor, until eventually she ends up in a hallway. A woman dressed in blue, with her whole body covered in a blue tattoo, appears and chases Rei down the hallway. The woman's hand makes contact with Rei's shoulder and she becomes afflicted with the Tattooed Curse.

Rei continues to chase Yuu through the manor, the tattoo spreading more every time she wakes up, and she begins to sleep for longer and longer. Eventually, Rei discovers that Miku Hinasaki is also having the same dreams she is. She continues to receive letters addressed to Yuu from Kei Amakura, a friend of Yuu's who lost contact with him. She informs him of Yuu's death over the phone and Kei asks to visit to pay his respects.

A few nights after, Miku succumbs to the curse. When Kei Amakura arrives at Rei's house, Rei is completely distraught over Miku's inability to awaken. Later, Kei disappears and only black soot is left where he was sleeping.

Rei continues on through the manor, eventually defeating and sending off Reika Kuze. As the spirits are crossing over she spots Yuu, and begs to him to go with him. Rei tells him the only reason she survived was because of his presence. Despite Rei's pleas, Yuu tells her that she has to go on living, so a part of him can continue on with her; he then absorbs her tattoos before crossing over. Afterwards, Rei wakes up to a sunny day in her bedroom, her tattoo curse now gone. Rei is suddenly overwhelmed over what has happened, including Yuu crossing over, and begins to cry.

After the credits, a scene appears of Rei and Miku watching the sunset on a beach; a contrast to the frequent raining throughout the entire game. Rei mentions that she will continue to go on living, even with the pain of her loss.

If the Photograph/Alternate ending is achieved where Kei is alive by the end of the game, Kei introduces Mio Amakura to Rei and Miku.

Misc. Info

  • Rei and Yuu met each other in college.[1]
  • Rei mentions in game she used to do photography work for fashion magazines.
  • Rei mentions that her favorite color is blue, also indicated by her clothing.
  • Originally, Rei's costume was going to be a skirt and shirt ensemble, but this was changed because the creators liked the pant design better. This previous design is one of Rei's unlockable costumes.
  • Rei's name is a play off of the Japanese title of the game, 零, which is pronounced also rei. Also, when Yuu and Rei's names are put together they spell "yuurei", Japanese for "ghost".
