Misao Asou is the father of Mio and Mayu Amakura, the heroines of Fatal Frame II. Hardly anything is known about him. He is a direct descendant of Dr. Kunihiko Asou, but it is unknown exactly how. This also makes him related in some way to Yuu Asou and Misaki Asou; how they are related has not been revealed. He is the true writer of Mio's memos, seen in-game.
We do know that when Misao married Shizu Amakura, he took her last name. The reason for this is unknown, but there is fan speculation it was to escape the last name of Asou, since Asou family members seem to suffer untimely deaths in the Fatal Frame Series.
When Mio and Mayu were very young, Misao became lost in the nearby woods of the Minakami area. He is specifically noted to have 'found' the Lost Village. His ultimate fate is unknown; however, his wife Shizu told her daughters that their father had died. It is more likely that Shizu knew what the fate of her husband was, since she soon after moved out of the area and would caution her daughters that people who get lost in the forest would become trapped in the village, refusing to tell them any more about it. It is mentioned in the Fatal Frame II Guidebook that the girls only knew their father through photographs since he died when they were so young. It also describes a dream Mayu has not long before the events of the game, in which Misao desperately chases after the twins, who are running off into the forest, but can't catch up to them.[1] The dream feels to Mayu almost like a memory of the past and seems to hint at how her father comes to be trapped in the village.
Misc. Info
- Both Misao Asou, Yuu Asou, and Misaki Asou are directly descended from Dr. Kunihiko Aso(u), the creator of the Camera Obscura. It is unknown how the three are related (or if they even knew each other).
- Misao is not specifically mentioned in Fatal Frame II, but on the Japanese website.[1]
