Miasma
From ZeroWiki
The miasma is unleashed by opening the Last Passage. It turns any air around it monochrome, casting everything into eternal night. If the atmosphere turns miasmatic, more dangerous ghosts will be attracted to you. The miasma can be temporarily dispelled with Purifying Light candles.
Miasma in the Real World
Miasma is a poisonous vapor or mist that is filled with particles from decomposed matter that could cause illnesses and is identifiable by its nasty, foul smell. It gets its name from the Greek word for pollution.
For a long time before the discovery of germs and the creation of germ theory, miasma was one of the main theories used to explain how diseases spread. The theory was that disease was spread by poisonous or foul air. It became popular in the Middle Ages and continued on until the middle 1800s in Europe. It was widely used to explain the spread of such diseases as cholera and the bubonic plague. It was believed that the spread of disease by miasma was preventable by cleansing items and the body. Although this theory was debunked by science, it helped society recognize the importance of sanitation to prevent the spread of disease. A remnant of this theory can be found in the name malaria, which comes from the Italian words mala aria meaning "bad air".
