Fatal Frame III Character
Kei Amakura is the second playable male character in the Fatal Frame Series. (Mafuyu Hinasaki being the first) Kei is the uncle of Mio and Mayu Amakura from Fatal Frame II and was a good friend of Yuu Asou and Mafuyu Hinasaki.

Past

Kei mentions he worked with Mafuyu under Junsei Takamine, but he has an interest in researching folklore. While looking into the disappearance of his niece Mayu, whom he suspects has been 'spirited away' like Takamine, Kei comes across the Camera Obscura in a house in an unnamed, small village that isn't listed on any maps. The camera seems to have a negative impact on his niece Mio, who appears frightened and distressed by it. Kei sends the camera to his friend Yuu Aso for safekeeping. Soon after the discovery of the camera, Kei's niece begins to sleep more and more, and complain of nightmares. As Kei researches into the cause of Mio's affliction, he realizes that Mio's symptoms are similar to those mentioned in the 'House of Sleep' urban legends. Kei continues to write to Yuu about his findings, as well as asking for help, unknowing that his friend has died in a car accident.

Fatal Frame III

As Kei researches more, he too begins to show symptoms of the curse, including having nightmares of a strange tattooed woman, and wonders if he is cursed or has merely been working too hard. He sees Mio in his dream, talking to herself and blaming herself for her sister Mayu's disappearance. As Kei tries to search for a cure, both in the dream world and out of it, he and Mio fall deeper and deeper under the curse's spell. In his dreams, Kei also meets a ghost with long hair, who keeps calling him 'Akito'. She continues to ask him why he left and didn't come back for her.

Looking for answers and information on the curse, Kei finally calls Yuu's house, only to hear from his fiancée Rei Kurosawa that he died in a car accident. She has been experiencing the same dreams he has, and he promises to visit soon to pay his respects to Yuu.

Mio's condition worsens, until finally Kei places her in the hospital. She is awake for barely three hours at a time, before going back to sleep. Kei then goes to visit Rei, and learns that her housemate, Miku Hinasaki, Mafuyu's younger sister, has fallen into a deep coma due to the curse. Putting their heads together, Kei tells Rei he thinks he knows of a solution to end the curse. He tells Rei that they must go to the Chamber of Thorns in the House of Sleep and impale the tattooed priestess with the Tattooed Stakes. This should prevent her from walking around, and will end everything.

Kei collects the sacred impaling stakes needed to complete his task from the Handmaidens' rooms in the manor. When he actually gets to the Chamber of Thorns, however, he finds that Reika has already been impaled. She then breaks free of the stakes and comes after Kei. Depending on the player's actions earlier in the game, Kei is either killed by Reika, leaving black soot-marks on Rei's couch, or she spares him because he is carrying Kaname's earring and he is left in a deep sleep like Miku.

Phrases While Sleeping

While Kei is sleeping on Rei's couch in her living room, he will utter one of two sentences:

"Mio... Mayu.... No... Don't go..."
"Yuu...! Mafuyu...! But why..? Please don't leave me behind..."

The End?

As it currently stands, there is no information on which ending of Fatal Frame III is canon, thus leaving Kei's and Mio's fates unknown.

First Ending

Kei is locked within the Chamber of Thorns, and disappears from the couch, leaving behind only black soot. He is presumably taken by the curse. When Rei breaks the curse, he does not return and there is no reference to the fate of his niece Mio.

Second Ending

Kei Amakura is saved and awakens from the curse on the couch. His niece Mio also awakens from her slumber and curse. Kei eventually introduces Mio to Rei and Miku.

Misc. Info

  • Shizu Amakura is Kei's older sister.
  • While Shizu is sick in hospital with an unnamed illness (unrelated to the Tattooed Curse), the twins are in Kei's care.
  • Kei Amakura bears an eerie resemblance to Akito Kashiwagi, Kyouka Kuze's lover. There is no evidence the two men are related.
  • Kei Amakura, while physically strong, has a very low camera ability, thus he was also given the ability to 'hide' from hostile spirits in Fatal Frame III.
  • Kei Amakura is not directly related to Dr. Aso. This is a common mistake, because his nieces Mio and Mayu are.
  • Whether or not Kei met Yuu through his sister's marriage to Misao is uncertain.
  • Originally, Kei Amakura was not going to be the third character in Fatal Frame III, his niece Mio was.
  • Kei is often mistaken for Yuu Aso, because both wear similar clothing. The best way to tell the two apart is that Yuu has a turtleneck shirt while Kei does not.
  • In Fatal Frame III, Kei's tattoo is Indigo.
  • Kei's name is a rhyming phonetic wordplay off of Rei Kurosawa's name.
