These red dolls, called Hozuki Dolls, are a traditional gift in the Rougetsu Archipelago.
Their ancient origin is not exactly known, but they started being made for the memorial service by parents who had lost a child.
Another island in the Rougetsu Archipelago designates the Hozuki Dolls as unlucky, assuming they brought disaster. But Rougetsu Island is an exception, and the dolls are placed in various locations as custom.
